Definition: Underlying refers to the commodity or futures contract upon which a given option is based. The price movement of the underlying dictates the price of a option contract.

Examples:
A wheat option is based on the fluctuations of a given wheat commodity contract. The July wheat commodity contract is the underlying contract for July wheat call and put options.
